Kasauli in Winter: Weather, Snow and What to Expect

Winter mountain views in Kasauli with pine forests and a sea of clouds at sunrise

Winter in Kasauli runs from December to February. The days are short and sunny, the nights are properly cold, and the lanes that feel busy in summer go quiet. Most people come for one of three reasons: the hope of snow, a peaceful Christmas or New Year with family, or simply a few slow days in the hills with a warm meal and a fire at the end of the day.

We live at FarmVille in Dharampur all year round, so we see each winter up close. This guide shares what the season is really like for winter 2026 to 2027, including an honest answer about snow, what to pack, what to do and how to plan the drive.

Kasauli Winter at a Glance

  • Winter months: December, January and February. January is the coldest.
  • Daytime: usually between 10 and 16°C, with bright sunshine on most days.
  • Nights: between 1 and 7°C, and close to freezing on the coldest January nights.
  • Snow: light and occasional, not guaranteed every year. Late December to early February is the likeliest window.
  • Sure snow nearby: Chail, Kufri and Narkanda, which sit higher than Kasauli.

How Cold Does Kasauli Get in Winter?

Kasauli sits at about 1,800 metres, which keeps winter cold but rarely harsh. Clear skies are common, so you get warm sun at midday and a sharp drop in temperature once the sun goes down. The figures below are approximate long-term averages. Always check a live forecast a few days before you leave.

February12 to 16°C3 to 6°CPossible early in the monthCold nights, days start to soften

December often has fog in the valleys below while Kasauli sits above it in sunshine. Christmas week is the busiest time of the season. January is the heart of winter, with frost on the grass most mornings. February stays cold at night, but afternoons grow warmer and the hills feel like early spring by the end of the month.

Does It Snow in Kasauli?

Yes, but not much and not every year. Kasauli gets light snowfall in some winters, usually a thin white layer that melts within a day or two. Other winters pass with no snow at all. Snow here depends on western disturbances, the weather systems that bring rain and cloud to the hills. When one arrives in January and the temperature is low enough, Kasauli may see a dusting.

Dharampur, where FarmVille is located, sits a little lower than Kasauli town, so snow is even rarer here. What you will get is cold, clear air, frosty lawns in the morning and some of the sharpest valley views of the year.

Where to See Snow Near Kasauli

If snow is the main goal of your trip, base yourself in Kasauli and plan a day out to a higher spot. These places see more regular snowfall:

  • Chail: higher than Kasauli and about a two hour drive from Dharampur via Solan. It gets snow more often and has thick deodar forests.
  • Kufri: just past Shimla and one of the most dependable snow points for a day trip in January.
  • Narkanda: further away, but it receives heavier snow and suits travellers willing to make a long day of it.

After heavy snowfall, roads to these places can close for a day or more. Check local updates on the morning you go, start early and plan to be back before dark.

Winter Packing List for Kasauli

The goal is to stay warm at night without overheating in the midday sun. This is what we suggest to our guests:

  • Thermal inner wear: the single most useful item, especially for January.
  • A heavy jacket or down coat: plus a sweater or fleece you can take off in the afternoon.
  • Woollen cap, gloves and thick socks: evenings outdoors get cold fast.
  • Shoes with good grip: shaded paths and steps can be frosty early in the day.
  • Moisturiser and lip balm: winter air in the hills is very dry.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: the winter sun is strong at this height.
  • A warm coat or blanket for your dog: if you are travelling with a pet.

Things to Do in Kasauli in Winter

Spend Christmas Around Christ Church

Christ Church on the Mall dates back to the 1850s and is the centre of Christmas in Kasauli. The church usually holds services around Christmas, and the Mall feels lively in the evenings that week. Even without attending a service, a walk past the church in the evening is a lovely way to mark the day.

Take Your Walks at Midday

In winter, the best hours for walking are between late morning and mid afternoon, when the sun is out and the paths have dried. The Gilbert Trail and the quieter lanes around the Upper Mall are calm at this time of year. Head back well before sunset, which comes early, around 5:30 pm in December.

Plan One Snow Day Trip

Spend one day in the snow at a higher spot and come back to a warm stay in the evening. Children get their snow day without you staying somewhere much colder.

Eat Warm, Local Food

Cold weather is the right time for hot Himachali dishes like siddu with ghee, rajma, kadhi and endless cups of chai. Our Kasauli food guide lists the dishes worth trying.

Welcome the New Year in Private

Many families prefer a private New Year in the hills over a crowded party in town. With your own lawn and a bonfire, you can count down to midnight with your own people. At FarmVille, a live band can be arranged on demand at extra cost if you want music for the evening.

Driving to Kasauli in Winter: Road Tips

  • Watch for fog in the plains: December and January bring thick morning fog on the highway between Delhi and Chandigarh. Leave after sunrise if visibility is poor.
  • Roads to Dharampur stay open: the Kalka to Shimla highway rarely sees snow at this height, but shaded bends can be slippery on cold mornings.
  • Travel time: Dharampur is a short drive from Chandigarh and about 6 to 7 hours from Delhi by road.

Is Winter a Good Time to Visit Kasauli?

Winter is worth it if you like quiet days, cold evenings and clear views. It suits couples looking for a cosy break, families planning a Christmas or New Year trip, and anyone who wants the hills without summer crowds.

It may not suit you if snow is the only reason for your trip, since Kasauli cannot promise it. Plan a day trip to a higher spot instead. Also note that the week between Christmas and New Year fills up fast, so book early if your dates fall then. If you prefer milder weather, our Kasauli autumn guide covers September to November.
